Join us in this 1-hour workshop and be better prepared for those bumps that may affect your sight translation fluency, or your transcription and translation speed and accuracy. A little knowledge of some word categories and some practical examples can take you a long way.

During these long pandemic months, most translators and interpreters needed to expand their professional services and found that subtitling was the translation modality they should learn. But beyond learning how to use specialized software, what specific skills should we develop to become professional subtitlers? What should we know about subtitling before offering this audiovisual translation service? In this talk, we will learn about the time-space restrictions, style conventions, and linguistic standards we should know in order to master the art of professional subtitling.

Ma. Angélica Ramírez holds a Ph.D. in translation from Alicante University. She has been an audiovisual translator for more than 25 years for Mexican television and pay channels in Latin America. She has also worked as a translator for Simon & Schuster and Larousse Mexico. She currently teaches subtitling courses in undergraduate and graduate programs in Mexico and subtitles educational and corporate videos. She is a founding partner of Proyecto Cenzontle and member of the Organización Mexicana de Traductores (OMT) and the Asociación Mexicana de Traductores Literarios (AMETLI).

The field of special education is tightly bound by legal procedures and complex terminology. As an integral part of the educational team, spoken language interpreters supporting schools and families during these complex interactions, must come prepared with the cultural and language tools necessary to ensure effective communication. This presentation will provide an overview of the special education process, starting with psychoeducational assessments where the interpreter’s impartiality and accuracy are of paramount importance to ensure that evaluations reflect the child’s true strengths and areas of need. Common terminology used in eligibility and Individualized Education Plan meetings will be shared, along with sight translation and consecutive interpretation exercises, resources for further professional development, and a glossary of terms commonly used in the special education process.

Chairperson of the National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages (NAETISL: https://naetisl.org/) and Founder of SeSo, Inc., a source of qualified and trained interpreters, and multicultural family engagement workshops for school districts. She completed her degree in Social Work at Georgia State University, her Master’s Degree in Public Health at Emory University, and is a Ph.D. in Special Education student at the University of Georgia. For over a decade, Ana worked with the largest school district in Georgia as the Language Services and Parent Outreach Coordinator, developing, implementing and evaluating professional development opportunities for multilingual personnel, as well as discovering endless opportunities to engage multilingual families in their children’s education. This session will present the basics of branding, with a particular slant towards the T&I professions, and it will be specifically geared toward the independent contractor or small, translator-run company. Topics covered will include brand distinctiveness, identity, consistency and branding on digital platforms. Attendee participation through discussion and questions will be encouraged.

Robert has been an ATA-certified translator since 1989 and holds certification in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian into English, as well as working from Catalan to English. In addition to CTA, he is also a member of ATA and NAJIT, and he is currently serving on the ATA Board of Directors (2020 through 2023). He has worked full-time as a translator since 1992 and has lived and studied in Spain, France and Russia. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in Spanish and French and a Professional Translation Certificate, he lived in Pittsburgh, PA for 27 years. Robert relocated to Denver in 2013 and now resides in Park Hill. In his free time he enjoys camping, traveling, exploring Colorado's many craft breweries and occasionally trying to wrap his mind around Russian case structure and grammar.

The Court Interpreters
Julie Drucker is a completely trilingual and tricultural, State and Federal certified interpreter. Her working languages are English, Spanish and French. She is certified by U.S. District Courts and the State of California and accredited by the American Translators Association. She has been providing interpreter services in English, Spanish and French for over 25 years. Julie earned a Baccalauréat from the French Lycée in Caracas, and Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree simultaneously, Summa Cum Laude, from UCLA in Latin American Studies in 2001.

Over the years, Julie has worked in a broad array of settings, ranging from international conferences, to town hall meetings, to political asylum cases. She has specialized in the legal industry working for both the prosecution and the defense in high profile, death-penalty cases. Nanyi Mateo is a Spanish Medical Interpreter certified by NBCMI and CCHI. Since 2018, she's been working as a video remote and over-the-phone medical interpreter as well as a quality assurance agent with multiple agencies across the United States.
