When you hire an interpreter, he/she will ask you several questions to help identify your specific interpreting needs.
Do you need simultaneous or consecutive interpreting? If simultaneous, have you made the necessary arrangements to obtain interpreting equipment? If the simultaneous job is over 2 hours, have you planned to hire two interpreters to maintain accuracy and prevent interpreter fatigue? In case of consecutive jobs, have you allocated enough time in the schedule for the extra time required for the interpretation?
Many interpreters have a wide range of experience in several areas, while others work mainly in one type of venue. Be sure to find an interpreter with the appropriate qualifications, training and experience.
Seminar / Conference Interpreters work in a conference or meeting setting and interpret simultaneously using wireless equipment or interpreting booths.
Legal / Judiciary Interpreters work primarily in the courts, interpreting for the parties to a legal action, as well as in other legal settings such as depositions, attorney/client meetings, etc.
Medical Interpreters work primarily in hospitals and the offices of health care providers.
Community Interpreters facilitate communication in less formal settings such as schools, community forums, the various offices dealing with immigrant matters, housing and social security and police stations.
